Description: I’ve often thought of how carefree I was as a child. We played and ran freely in my small town of Del Norte, CO. My grandmother, mother and aunts called us Changitos because we got into everything and climbed everything. Having 9 kids, mom did laundry every single Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We had chores after school which included taking the laundry from the clothesline, to folding and ironing the clothes. The pink house we lived in always had kids, flowers, cats, and dogs. We spent a lot of time at our Aunts and Grandma’s place where we were surrounded by trees, rivers, and a swamp. I have many memories of lying on the lawn looking up at the sky and the clouds or the stars in the dark clear sky. There were so many near deaths because we were “cabritos” (little goats/kids”), but by the Grace of God, most of us came out with only physical scars. This quilt details some of what we were surrounded by growing up. I miss the smell of clothes hanging from the line. I miss all the flowers mom had and those we ate. I’ve been craving, “quelites.” I don’t even know the English name, but it might be “wild spinach.”
